Pine Street’s Preparedness for Extreme Weather and Heat

This project is dedicated to the late Vince Leggett, “Champion of the Chesapeake”

The Pine Street Neighborhood Historic District can trace its history back to the 1800’s, when it was established by free African Americans. A thriving community of African American owned businesses in the 1920’s, Pine Street faced significant economic decline with the Great Depression. The neighborhood, still primarily an African American community, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. Today, this historically important community experiences challenges caused by extreme heat and other damaging weather events. We worked with Blacks of the Chesapeake to engage members of the Pine Street Community in identifying the greatest resilience challenges they face, factors that contribute to these threat, and how they may be addressed.

2021 Maryland Coastal Adaptation Report Card

A first of its kind climate adaptation and resilience assessment, this is the project that started it all! For over a decade, the State of Maryland invested in adaptation to climate change, becoming a leader in coastal and climate adaptation. In order to measure progress toward adaptation goals, we worked with the Adaptation and Resiliency Work Group (ARWG) of the Maryland Commission on Climate Change (MCCC) and member from across Maryland’s coastal counties to develop and measure indicators of resilience and provide a snapshot of current adaptation status in Maryland’s coastal zone.

Charles County, MD Climate Adaptation Report Card

This community-level resilience report card examines the preparedness of the Eastport neighborhood in Annapolis, MD to threats like severe weather and flooding. After surveying community members to identify priority concerns in the neighborhood, indicators to assess threats and resilience around those concerns were selected to give the community a preparedness score. This report card recommends individual and community-wide actions that can reduce vulnerability in areas of concern.
